A Journey Beyond Zakynthos: Top Island Destinations in the Ionian Sea

Zakynthos, with its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, is a fantastic base for exploring other nearby Greek islands in the Ionian Sea.

These days most people tend to stick to one island per trip (the golden age of Greek island hopping was back in the 70s and 80s). Having said that, there’s no reason you can’t buck the trend and plan a multi-island adventure, even just taking some day trips. While island-hopping can make travelling in Greece more complex, it can be done. What's more, it can make for a richly diverse experience.

Here's a guide to visiting four enchanting islands: Ithaka, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Corfu. Each offers unique experiences and can be easily reached on easy day trips.

Ithaka: The Mythical Isle

Why Visit

Ithaka, the legendary home of Odysseus, is steeped in myth and history. Its unspoiled beauty, with rugged landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and charming villages, offers a serene escape. Don't miss the picturesque village of Kioni and the archaeological sites linked to Homer’s epic tales.

How to Get There

From Zakynthos, take a ferry to the mainland (Kyllini) and then drive to the port of Astakos, where you can catch a ferry to Ithaka. Alternatively, there are organized boat tours that offer a more direct route.

Lefkada: The Land of Stunning Coastlines

Why Visit

Lefkada is renowned for its dramatic cliffs and stunning beaches, such as Porto Katsiki and Egremni. It’s a paradise for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts, with Vassiliki and Agios Ioannis being top spots. Lefkada Town’s vibrant culture and Venetian architecture add to its charm.

How to Get There

To reach Lefkada, take a ferry from Zakynthos to Kyllini, drive to Nidri on the mainland, and then hop on a ferry to Lefkada. Or, there are day cruises that offer a more leisurely journey.

Kefalonia: The Island of Natural Wonders

Why Visit

Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, boasts diverse landscapes, from the lush greenery of Mount Ainos to the mystical caves of Melissani and Drogarati. The iconic Myrtos Beach, with its turquoise waters and white pebbles, is a must-visit. The island’s charming towns, such as Fiskardo and Assos, offer delightful culinary and cultural experiences.

How to Get There

Direct ferries from Zakynthos to Kefalonia’s port of Pessada make for a convenient journey. There are also organized day trips that include guided tours of the island’s highlights.

Corfu: The Cosmopolitan Jewel

Why Visit

Corfu, with its rich history and cosmopolitan vibe, is a cultural treasure. Explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town, with its Venetian, French, and British influences. The island’s lush landscapes, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife make it a versatile destination. Don't miss the Achilleion Palace and the scenic views from Mount Pantokrator.

How to Get There

Reaching Corfu involves taking a ferry from Zakynthos to the mainland, driving to Igoumenitsa, and then catching a ferry to Corfu. For a hassle-free experience, consider booking a guided tour that covers transportation and key attractions.
