Discover Menorca: The Island that Defied Mass Tourism

Looking for a party hotspot? Menorca isn't it. You won't find Benidorm's wild nightlife or Magaluf's bustling bar streets here. No towering concrete resorts or throngs of boozy tourists.

Why? It all goes back to General Franco's grudge against Menorca. As punishment for siding with the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, Franco cut off public funds and infrastructure investment for nearly four decades. Meanwhile, Mallorca and Ibiza, which supported Franco, received a flood of money for rapid development during the tourism boom of the 60s and 70s.

The result? Menorca remains blissfully free of high rises and large-scale resorts. Instead, you'll find charming whitewashed apartments and ivy-green shuttered houses. While a few resorts do have the odd high rise, they're the exception, not the rule.

Dodging the pitfalls of mass tourism has preserved Menorca's unique charm, setting it apart from other Spanish destinations transformed by package tourism and hasty construction.

Check out Menorca and see for yourself which place had the last laugh.
