Supermarkets situated on the outskirts of Mahón and Ciutadella are significantly cheaper - by at least 50% for many items - versus the convenient but expensive small supermarkets found in tourist hubs.
I'm a big believer that you should put your money into local businesses as much as you can, and those small supermarkets will be ideal for stocking up for your kitchen or grabbing snacks and drinks on your day trip.
However, the discrepancies in costs per item do mean that you will save a significant amount by doing your ‘big shop’ outside either of the two cities if you’re staying and self-catering for 7+ days or budget is a concern. This is obviously easier if you’ve got your own rental car.
Kerry's Tip. The ice-cold, refrigerated drinks are always more expensive to buy in the shop than the unrefrigerated ones. Therefore, if you’re buying to stock back in your fridge rather than to drink there and then, you can save quite a bit by buying from the shelf instead of the fridge.
