What to Know Before You Go: Zakynthos Travel Tips

To make your stay in Zakynthos as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here are a few friendly tips to keep in mind:

1. Toilet Paper and Rubbish Bins

The toilet system on Zakynthos is a bit different from what you might be used to. Please don’t throw toilet paper in the toilet—there are bins provided for this purpose. You’ll find helpful reminders on stickers above the toilets to guide you.

2. Drinkable Water

The tap water on the island isn’t safe to drink. Make sure to grab bottled water from the supermarket. A six-pack of 1.5-liter bottles typically costs around €1.50 to €2.00.

3. Mosquitoes

Zakynthos has its fair share of mosquitoes. While they’re not dangerous, they can be quite pesky. Pack some mosquito repellent or cream to avoid itchy bites. If you forget, don’t worry—pharmacies on the island have plenty of options.

4. Getting Around

There’s no public transport directly from the airport to other parts of the island. Taxis and rental cars are your best bets for getting to your accommodation. Once you’re settled, local buses (KTEL) can take you to popular spots like Laganas, Kalamaki, and Tsilivi.

5. Ferry Tickets

Planning to visit Kefalonia? The ferry tickets from Agios Nikolaos (Zakynthos) to Pessada (Kefalonia) can’t be booked online. Simply head to the port to purchase your tickets in person.

6. Cash vs. Cards

Not all shops and restaurants on the island accept credit cards just yet. While more places are starting to, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand.

7. Road Conditions

Zakynthos has a mix of charming, winding roads and mountainous terrain. The roads might not always match what you’re used to at home, so drive carefully, especially around hairpin turns. Remember, in Greece, they drive on the right side of the road.

8. Zebra Crossings

Greek drivers may not always stop at zebra crossings. Be sure to check that the road is clear before you cross.

9. Electricity

Zakynthos uses 220V electricity, and you’ll need a continental plug to charge your devices.

10. Greek Meal Times

The Greek dining culture is a bit different. Lunch is typically around 3 PM, and dinner starts after 9 PM. Embrace the local schedule and enjoy leisurely meals!

11. Footwear in Zakynthos Town

Kerry's top tip: if you plan to visit Zakynthos Town, avoid wearing heels on the square. The tiles can be tricky and uncomfortable to walk on - ask me how I know!

We hope these tips help you make the most of your trip to Zakynthos! Enjoy your time on this beautiful island and soak in all its wonderful sights and experiences.
