What to Wear in Egypt: Combining Comfort and Respect

Egypt, with its rich history and diverse landscapes, is a destination where your choice of clothing can significantly impact your experience. Here's a guide to striking the right balance between comfort and respect for local customs.

1. Embrace Cotton Comfort:

Egypt is renowned for its cotton, making it the ideal fabric for your attire. Pack breathable, airy clothes to combat the warm climate. Pastels and bright colors not only keep you cool but also blend well with the vibrant surroundings.

2. Keep It Conservative:

Egypt is home to primarily conservative locals, so modesty in clothing is key. Opt for loose-fitting attire that covers your shoulders, chest, and knees. Avoid exposing too much skin to show respect for local norms.

3. Dressing for Men:

Men can comfortably wear tank tops in major cities but be prepared for a few extra stares. However, short shorts are generally discouraged. Instead, opt for longer shorts or lightweight trousers to stay comfortable.

4. Dressing for Women:

For women, it's advisable to avoid low-cut tops, short shorts, short skirts, or revealing dresses. A maxi dress or lightweight pants with a loose blouse is a practical choice. When visiting religious sites, consider carrying a scarf to cover your hair and shoulders.

5. Beach Destinations:

At beach destinations like Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada, you can relax these guidelines somewhat. Locals are accustomed to tourists, and beachwear is more acceptable. Feel free to pack shorts, sundresses, and swimwear, but remember to cover up when leaving the beach area.

6. Be Respectful:

Respect for local customs is essential. When in doubt, observe what the locals are wearing, especially in more conservative areas, and follow suit. It's a sign of appreciation for their culture.

7. Footwear:

Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially if you plan to explore archaeological sites. Sandals or flip-flops are suitable for beach areas.

8. Sun Protection:

Don't forget to pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun's intense rays.

By adhering to these clothing guidelines, you'll not only stay comfortable in Egypt's climate but also show respect for the local culture. Remember, blending in with the locals can lead to a more enriching and enjoyable travel experience in this captivating country.

Have a fabulous trip!
